How to motivate yourself to write your fantasy story idea

How to motivate yourself to write your fantasy story idea

When it comes to creating a fantasy fiction story, there are many trials that we face. For example, you might find yourself suddenly asking, ‘Why can't I motivate myself to write?’

And this might come after you found that exciting fantasy story idea, started worldbuilding, and fleshed out a possible power system.

Maybe you had even started picturing your compelling fictional characters, only to suddenly hit a slump.

If this is your situation, the good news is you’re not alone. The better news is, I have just the right solutions for you.

These are real, effective ways that will help you not only to find motivation to write your story idea, but also to craft a memorable fantasy fiction.

Get out of the house and hunt.

Shocking, yes, I know, but stay with me cause it’s not what you think. Many times writers or prospective writers are stuck in the same daily routine. Could be, wake up, workout, go to work, sleep, and repeat.

The problem here is there’s little to nothing that serves to energize or excite your creative writing spirit.  And it gets worse if you work from home; then your routine is just downright boring and creatively stifling. Of course, you will feel unmotivated to write your book.

Which brings us back to the hack. What you need to do is get out of the house and break away from your routine more often. Once you’re out, make it a point to actively search/hunt for ideas to include in your story.

To give you an example, one time when I did this, I took special notice of a lady on a commercial motorcycle. She sat on it sideways with her legs close together. This is how women used to ride commercial bikes back in the day in my country. It was unusual to see now. So it stood out to me as something to include in the worldbuilding of a project.

Use specialized fantasy fiction tools.

Yes, these exist. You just haven’t looked before. By specialized fantasy fiction tools, I mean guides, workbooks, templates that literally hold your hand on the path to writing your fantasy fiction or developing the story.

I can recommend some now.

There’s my very own:

Fantasy Fiction Story Development Bundle, which includes the Fictional Universe Worldbuilding Guide, Power System Development Guide, and the Craft Great Characters Guide.

The benefit of using tools like this to spark motivation to write your fantasy novel is that they fix the issue of not knowing where to start, or what to put down next. This could be a root cause of your lack of motivation.

Set a daily goal with this formula.

If you’re struggling to motivate yourself to write, there’s no need to try to force yourself to write multiple pages in one sitting.

Instead, set a more achievable daily goal. 30 minutes: write one specific thing. It could be a scene; you could flesh out a monster in the story, or develop a character’s powers better.

One thing, 30 minutes, every day.

Not only will you make progress writing your story, but you’re likely to exceed 30 minutes most days when you find your flow.

Engage a creative writing coach or consultant.

Again, yes, this exists, and it is super helpful whether you can’t find motivation to write your novel or you’re plenty motivated and would love to talk to someone about what you’re building.

A writing coach can serve as a professional brainstorming partner or consultant to help you in many ways. Talking to one can unlock ideas and spark that motivation you struggle with. They might even uncover your blocker and guide you to work it out.

You’ll always leave the call refreshed, excited, motivated, and with more ideas to further your fantasy story.

You can find such a professional here. Book these calls as often as you need to.

Watch a good anime, movie, or read a good book.

Emphasis on good. Pick up something praised for how masterful it is. Even better if it’s close in style or genre to the story you’re writing.

This is one hack that has often worked for me. When I watch something good, I’m immediately charged up to work on my stuff, because I too want to see my fantasy story come to life.

Hire help

Creative writing help exists in different forms. For example, here at Arc Creator you can hire my services to develop your fictional universe, flesh out compelling characters, do your power system development, and even some plot fleshing.

Then at the end of the project, you get a story bible with everything detailed and organized for you to write.

If you want, I can also do the writing as a ghostwriter. Whichever assistance you need, the process is both done-for-you and done-with-you so your ideas and vision are the focus.

You can learn more about this here.

Decide that no one will read this and let it rip.

Sometimes behind a lack of motivation to write your story is fear. You might be procrastinating out of fear that your story won’t turn out right, or your idea isn’t good enough.

The fix is this: decide that no one will read this story and let it rip. Decide that you’re writing this fantasy novel, anime, manga, or film for you and no one else.

When you do this, you realize you can write now because you don’t need it to be perfect. You don't need to have it all figured out. You just need to express and craft.

Listen to other writers.

I like this one a lot. I find that listening to podcasts or interviews of other writers can ignite my spark to write that day.  It's highly motivating. My go-tos are How I Write with David Perell and Ink in Your Veins with Rachel Herron.

If you try one or all of these, let me know how it helped you in the comments. Onward, friend.
